The Nose

Ascension Avenue is the street associated with Ivan Yakovlevitch, the barber at the center of the nose’s discovery and attempted disposal. It anchors the story’s extraordinary events in an ordinary urban setting: the barber lives there, and the police later identify his home as the place from which the nose’s disappearance can be traced.

Setting and the Barber

On 25 March, Ivan Yakovlevitch is introduced as a barber living on Ascension Avenue. His sign depicts a gentleman with one cheek lathered, but gives no family name; its only inscription advertises bloodletting. The modest sign and his trade establish a recognizable neighborhood setting before the strange occurrence begins.

The Nose and the Street

After finding a nose inside a loaf of bread, Ivan recognizes it as belonging to Platon Kovaloff, a member of the Municipal Committee whom he shaves regularly. He wraps it in cloth and leaves home intending to get rid of it. When an acquaintance interrupts him and a sentry notices it after it falls, Ivan cannot dispose of it; he eventually goes to the Isaac Bridge and throws it into the Neva.

Police and Public Consequences

The police commissary later tells Platon Kovaloff that the barber from Ascension Avenue has been arrested, identifying him as the principal culprit in the affair. The street thus becomes more than Ivan’s address: it provides the geographical link through which the city’s authorities connect the barber to the missing nose. The episode places a private, inexplicable incident within an urban network of streets, bridges, and police action, without explaining how the nose came to be in the bread or why it could act independently.
